Poteau

Get a good view of the Ouachita National Forest from Poteau, Oklahoma's Cavanal Hill, dubbed "the world's highest hill" and just one foot shy of a designation as a mountain. Climb down and take a drive on the breathtaking Talimena Scenic Drive. Visit the Kerr Conference Center and Museum, the former home of the Governor and U.S. Senator Robert S. Kerr, where you can stroll through the Kiamichi Mountains or discover the local history at the adjacent museum. Plant yourself at the nearby Overstreet-Kerr Historical Farm, a 106-year-old home with an orchard, antique farm equipment displays and a population of rare livestock and poultry. Check out Poteau's annual Balloonfest and watch as a fleet of hot air balloons take to the sky. Stick around until after the sun goes down to witness the sky light up with magnificent balloon glows.
