Originally named Frazer, the word “Altus” is Latin for “high place,” which is appropriate considering Altus was renamed when the town moved to higher ground after a flood in the late 1800s. It is also home to high-flying planes and the Altus Air Force Base, a major training location for the United States Air Force.
The beauty of Lake Altus-Lugert is breathtaking, so head out to Altus and take advantage of all the opportunities for boating, camping, wildlife watching and beautiful scenery at Quartz Mountain. At the Altus City Reservoir, you can even try your hand at disc golf and fish for channel catfish and largemouth bass.
