Haskell County, located in east-central Oklahoma, was named after Charles N. Haskell, Oklahoma’s first governor. In 1831, the Choctaw tribe began moving into the new Choctaw Nation, located in present-day Haskell County. During the Civil War, Camp Pike was a Confederate base in the county and a series of Civil War skirmishes took place in the area. The Midland Valley Railroad Company and the Fort Smith and Western Railway were brought to the area in the early 1900s to support the coal mining industry. The Haskell County Historical Society Museum in Stigler features displays and records of Haskell County history. Lake John Wells offers campsites, fishing and other activities.
