Located in southeastern Oklahoma, McIntosh County was named for an influential Creek family. Much of McIntosh County is covered by Lake Eufaula, the state’s largest man-made lake, created in 1964. Early explorers and traders traveled the area because of the three large rivers that converged there: the Canadian River, North Canadian River and the Deep Fork River. Later, the Texas Road ran through McIntosh County. In 1863 during the Civil War, the Battle of Honey Springs took place near Rentiesville and was the largest Civil War battle fought in Oklahoma. Lake Eufaula State Park offers activities, camping and access to Lake Eufaula. Honey Springs Battlefield near Rentiesville features exhibits detailing the history of the Civil War battle that took place there. In Checotah, the restored 1890 Katy Depot houses local artifacts.
