The Skirvin Hotel has played host to the rich and famous.

An ornate chandelier decorates the lobby of the Colcord Hotel in downtown Oklahoma City, charming guests today just as it did in 1910 when the hotel opened. A few blocks away, the distinctive Skirvin Hilton Hotel, completed in 1911, stands strong with its restored original brick façade. Just 90 minutes to the east in Tulsa, The Mayo, built in 1925, boasts opulent event space, while the Hotel Ambassador, built in 1929, is once again a towering architectural presence, reflecting the glamour of bygone days.

The Colcord Hotel, Oklahoma City

On a weekend jaunt to celebrate our anniversary, my husband and I stayed at the Colcord Hotel, touted as the first contemporary-style luxury hotel in downtown Oklahoma City. The weather outside was wet and cold, but inside the Colcord, it was all sunshine: a warm, friendly staff offered us impeccable service.

Looking out, our spacious room offered a bird’s eye view of downtown Oklahoma City.  Inside, an abundance of amenities and a rich mix of cream, burgundy and black hues welcomed us. Some of our favorite amenities were the cozy reading nook, and the chaise lounge by the window that seemed to suggest time for daydreaming or a nap.

During our stay, we discovered that the Colcord was actually Oklahoma City’s first skyscraper, built by prominent businessman Charles Francis Colcord as a luxury office building that was equipped with every modern convenience at the time, along with gleaming marble, ornate nickel elevator doors and intricate plasterwork. We found the total Colcord experience to have an almost theatrical quality, with its immersion in color, design, art, architecture and fine dining.
