Pottawatomie County, located in central Oklahoma, was named for the Potawatomi tribe. In the early 1800s, explorers went through the area, including the Leavenworth-Dodge Expedition of 1834. The California Road and the West Shawnee Cattle Trail both ran through Pottawatomie County in the 1800s. In 1895, the Choctaw, Oklahoma and Gulf Railroad was constructed in the county. Due to the oil boom in the early 1900s, Pottawatomie County hit its population crest in 1930 with 66,572 people. In Shawnee, the Santa Fe Depot Museum houses historical artifacts and exhibits in a stone depot built in 1904. Also in Shawnee, the Citizen Potawatomi Nation Cultural Heritage Museum preserves artifacts and offers a family research center. The Tecumseh Historical Museum displays local history information and exhibits.
