Crosstimbers (aka Central Oklahoma/Texas Plains)

Step into Oklahoma's wide-ranging Crosstimbers ecoregion (aka Central Oklahoma/Texas Plains), and you'll find an incredible variety of activities! Bask in the outdoors at numerous lakes and state parks throughout the region, from the heavily wooded Chickasaw National Recreation Area in Sulphur to Lake Murray, Lake Texoma, Arcadia Lake and more! Or for a more luxurious getaway, head to Guthrie, Oklahoma's Bed and Breakfast Capital, where elegant hospitality and historic attractions abound. Further north, Bartlesville's Price Tower (Frank Lloyd Wright's only skyscraper) promises upscale accommodations, while the Woolaroc Museum and Wildlife Preserve opens the door to the finer things in life as enjoyed by oilman Frank Phillips. Historic Fort Reno and Fort Washita tell the tale of army life in the territorial era.

Of Interest:
 
  • Chickasaw National Recreation Area on Lake of the Arbuckles – one of the best fishing lakes in Oklahoma for catfish, crappie, largemouth bass, white bass and bluegill. The recreation area was the first national park in Oklahoma and has beautiful swimming areas, camping grounds and areas for horseback riding. The area is also known for its natural water falls and rushing water of Travertine Creek.
  • Turner Falls Park - the oldest park in Oklahoma has beautiful picnic areas, nature trails, caves, geological wonders and 2 unique natural swimming pools.
  • Woolaroc Museum and Wildlife Preserve (Bartlesville) - The country home of oil baron Frank Phillips. Called the Little Smithsonian of the West, showcasing paintings, sculptures and artifacts. The Wildlife Preserve includes deer, elk, longhorn cattle and one of Oklahoma's largest privately owned buffalo herds
  • Lake Texoma State Park - one of the most popular vacation destinations in the Southwest. It's famous for its great fishing, excellent marinas and resorts, its natural beauty and nightlife.
  • Chickasaw Pointe (near Lake Texoma) - one of the nation’s top 10 public golf courses
  • Price Tower (Bartlesville) - Frank Lloyd Wright's only skyscraper.
  • The Round Barn in Arcadia
  • Guthrie is Oklahoma’s Bed and Breakfast capital and has the largest contiguous urban area in the U.S. listed on the National Register of Historic Districts
  • Oklahoma Frontier Drugstore Museum in Guthrie is located in a turn-of-the-century pharmacy
  • Byron Berline’s Double Stop Fiddle Shop & Music Hall in Guthrie
  • Oklahoma Territorial Museum in Guthrie focuses on the 1889 Land Run
  • Prague Historical Museum - the Czech History is recorded through many antiques including Prague and Jim Thorpe memorabilia
  • Santa Fe Depot Museum (Shawnee) is a unique railroad building with pioneer items and pre-Oklahoma territory artifacts
  • Fort Washita (near Durant) was used by Zachary Taylor, Robert E. Lee, Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie. Scheduled reenactments bring the frontier, military existence to life.
  • Mabee-Gerrer Museum (Shawnee) - Egyptian mummies and ceremonial objects and Greek/Roman objects
  • The Jasmine Moran Children’s Museum (Seminole) - the world's largest children's museums and one of North America's favorite family destinations
  • Deep Fork National Wildlife Refuge protects important wetlands along the Deep Fork River and is a newcomer to the National Wildlife Refuge System.
  • Other State Parks: Lake Murray Resort Park, Lake Thunderbird State Park, Okmulgee State Park, Wah-Sha-She State Park, Dripping Springs State Park, Keystone State Park, Walnut Creek State Park, Boggy Depot State Park

Terrain Description:
 

The Central Great Plains ecoregion is a transition area between the once prairie, now winter wheat growing regions to the west and the forested low mountains of eastern Oklahoma. Transitional "cross-timbers" (little bluestem grassland with scattered blackjack oak and post oak trees) is the native vegetation.
