nation's first national wildlife refuge, home to buffalo,
elk, deer, longhorn cattle and prairie dogs
- Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge - the only
place in the world where visitors can dig for hourglass
selenite crystals (Apr. - Oct. 15). Winter seasonal visitors
include ducks, geese, cranes, and bald eagles. Summer brings
endangered interior least terns, egrets, herons, and pelicans
among others. Peak fall and spring migration of ducks, geese,
and sandhill cranes on the refuge can number nearly 100,000
birds. The area is a major nesting site for the snowy plover,
endangered interior least tern, and American avocet. It
is also a major migration rest area for hundreds of thousands
of shorebirds during spring, summer, and fall.
- Alabaster Caverns State Park - 3/4 mile cavern
made of alabaster, which is the world’s largest gypsum
cave open to the public. Wild caving is allowed with a permit.

off-road vehicle enthusiasts visit the park for the exceptional
sand dunes. Dune buggy tours through the sand dunes.

Terrain Description: |
|
The Central Great Plains receive more precipitation than
the neighboring Southwestern Tablelands, resulting in more
vegetation. The terrain is slightly more irregular than the
Western High Plains. Once a grassland, with scattered low
trees and shrubs in the south, much of this ecoregion is now
cropland. |
