| El Reno - Central (Frontier Country) | |||||||||
Nestled in the heart of the Canadian River Valley, El Reno is located at the intersection of two historic highways, nostalgic Route 66 and the Chisholm Trail (U.S. Highway 81). The city is home to an assortment of outstanding attractions, including an authentic rail trolley, as well as specialty shopping, dining, festivals and historic sites. Four miles west of El Reno on Route 66 you will find Fort Reno. These historic grounds were established in 1875 as an Indian Territory military fort. The cavalry and infantry units stationed at Fort Reno played a critical role in the transition of Oklahoma from territorial status to statehood. In October, the Tombstone Tales event brings the fort's history alive as buffalo soldiers, Indian scouts, cavalrymen, settlers, and even WWII German POWs appear to tell their stories. Downtown El Reno offers many opportunities for unique shopping, from Victorian to southwest. Tour the art gallery, discover great antiques and collectibles, visit the candle factory, or just eat at one of many great restaurants. For museum enthusiasts, the Canadian County Historical Museum also is rated as one of the outstanding museums in Oklahoma. Looking for recreational activities? Crimson Creek Golf Course, designed by P.B. Dye, Jr., is guaranteed to provide one of your most challenging games. Adjacent to the golf course lies Lake El Reno, home to water skiing, fishing, camping and even a small herd of buffalo. You also could call El Reno a festival town. It comes alive with music, parades and great food on most holidays-and on many dates in between. There's an event for everyone, from festivals celebrating our heritage to a tribute to the aromatic onion burgers that have been cooked daily in El Reno since the early 1900s.
