Elk City is well known for its friendliness and warm hospitality. You'll find what you're looking for in Elk City, quiet residential neighborhoods, diverse retail shopping district, recreational facilities that provide children and adults a large variety of sporting activities, competent professionals in every area, and an outstanding regional medical center. Elk City also provides its citizens with opportunities for growth and expression in the form of a top quality public library, a community civic center, a local theatre group, college and vo-tech classes fifteen minutes away and numerous churches of various denominations.

Elk City's geographical location has been responsible for a colorful and historic past. Major highways now meet where once a number of important routes passed, the most famous of which is the "Great Western or Dodge City Cattle Trail".

Elk City became a townsite in 1901 as a shipping center at the end of the Choctaw, Oklahoma, and Gulf Railway Line. Originally called Crowe, the townspeople, eager for industry, renamed the town Busch, hoping to woo the favors of Adophus Busch, so that the town might get a brewery. However, when the brewery didn't materialize, the name Elk City was adopted. Present day Elk City is named after Elk Creek, which runs through the city. The creek was named after Indian Chief, Elk River.

While its location has made it an ideal transportation hub, Elk City also has strong ties to agriculture through beef and dairy cattle production. Cotton, alfalfa, wheat and other grains are also produced in this region.

Because of its location along historic "Route 66", millions of people have passed through Elk City traveling towards the golden shores of California and back again. Route 66 is the most famous highway ever! Its path crossed eight states from Chicago, Illinois to Los Angeles, California. The National Route 66 Museum, in Elk City, focuses on the people who lived, worked and traveled "the Road" and offers visitors a classic walk through all eight states, highlighted by realistic murals and vignettes featuring vintage automobiles. Route 66 travelers will be greeted by the restored giant Kachina dolls, Myrtle and Yah-Ta-Hey, and an authentic hand carved Cigar Store Indian. Nostalgia abounds in a visit to the Old Town Complex where art and architecture go hand in hand with folk history in Oklahoma. The Beutler Rodeo Hall is a treat in itself featuring Rodeo memorabilia from a long line of the nation's top rodeo stock producers, the Beutlers. The Farm & Ranch Museum features a vast collection of early tools of farm and ranch life.
