The beautiful downtown district of Hobart is on the National Registry of Historic Places with the majority of the downtown brick buildings built in the 1901-1910 era. Hobart, the City of Iris, is located in Southwest Oklahoma and in the Heart of Great Plains Country. The Kiowa County Courthouse, the center point of the downtown area, is the oldest operating courthouse in the state. The Kiowa Country Mosaic Tile Project, located on the Courthouse Square, is the largest tile project in the country and displays the history of Kiowa County. The Kiowa County Historical Museum, housed in the historically registered Rock Island Depot, was voted as the best museum in Oklahoma in 2004 and has one of the largest collections of history of pioneering in this area of Oklahoma. Recently the General Tommy Franks Leadership Institute and Museum has made its home directly across the street from the Kiowa County Historical Museum. Hobart hosts the Annual Arts on the Square Celebration and is adding the Celebration of Freedom, a patriotic day to honor our military men, women, and families. This year’s celebration will be May 23rd, 2009. The city brings to mind many traits of times gone by. Booth Drug on Forth and Main St. has an original soda fountain and the Shortgrass Theatre in Old City Hall even has its own ghost!
