The town of Sapulpa, known as "the Heart of Historic Route 66," is one of Oklahoma's official Main Street communities, dedicated to the restoration and preservation of its historic downtown. Throughout the year, the city plays host to visitors experiencing the nostalgia and myth of the "Mother Road." Downtown businesses carry many Route 66 souvenirs for travelers to remember their visit to Sapulpa and their journey. Indeed, travelers have always been a common sight in this town, where five major highways converge, including the Turner Turnpike, Interstate 44, State Highway 97, State Highway 66, and the new Creek Expressway.

Just a quick 15 minutes from the heart of metropolitan Tulsa, Sapulpa is the county seat for Creek County and occupies an area over which six nations have flown their flags-Spain, France, England, Mexico, the Choctaw Indian Nation, and the United States. The town's character has been shaped by three historic factors-Native Americans, railroads and oil. Chief Sapulpa, the area's first permanent settler, was a full-blood lower Creek Indian of the Kasihta Tribe of Alabama. He arrived in Indian Territory in 1850 and established a trading post near the confluence of Polecat and Rock creeks, about one mile south of present-day downtown Sapulpa. The town flourished, and was incorporated in 1898. In 1905, the discovery of oil in Glenpool, six miles southeast, fostered a local oil boom and the city's greatest period of growth.

Today Sapulpa enjoys a new prosperity with a thriving business community and an increase in industry in the area. Home to two renowned upscale restaurants, Freddies Steakhouse and The Avalon, Sapulpa has become the destination, not just a stop, for Route 66 travelers. Frankhoma Pottery, an internationally renowned company, has made its home in Sapulpa since first opening its doors in the 1930s. Famous for its original dinner ware, Frankhoma also offers unique and lovely gift items for visitors. Outdoor recreation is available as well with 15 park and recreation areas including trout fishing at Pretty Water Lake and two 18 hole golf courses.

Any questions about the city’s attractions may be directed to the Sapulpa Chamber of Commerce, (918)224-0170, or you can visit their website or go to www.toursapulpa.com.
