Description

Cavanal Hill is boasted as the world's highest hill at 1,999 ft above the surrounding terrain. Cavanal Hill derives its name from the French word meaning "cave," and was a famous landmark for the French and American Indians over 150 years ago. Thomas Nuttal of Boston first became interested in this "mountain" in 1819 and spent time here studying plant life and talking to the American Indians and French trappers about the hill and all its natural wonders.  He noted that the local Indians claimed to hear "rumbling noises from deep within the caves."

I lived on the highest point of cavanal hill for 2 years in the house that sat where the new tower now sets. I have seen unbelievable scenery through all 4 seasons from the tornado that took the old Walmart to snow storms that made town look like a frozen snow globe. I have stood on the old fire tower that is long gone and watched lightning strike a tower a few mountains away, and I know just how beautiful this mountain can be.

That is amazing that the elevation is not correct. That was not a cheap sign to construct. If someone could correct the elevation that would make Oklahoma a bit more truth-e. The elevation should read more then 2,300. Thanks for correcting this wrong.

Carl, we're sorry you haven't been successful in getting to the top of Cavanal Hill. Although we don't have an address for the hill, we have updated the directions, which you can see by clicking the 'Directions' tab just above the comment section. Have a great day and thank you for using TravelOK.com!

I've been there twice with no luck figuring out hot to get to the top. The motel gave me a map but it was no help. How about an address or something so someone could punch it in the GPS. It's frustrating to try to find something that has no signs.

A friend and I, were recently traveling through Oklahoma, and stopped here on a whim. I loved driving up that LARGE hill! It was exhilarating and we felt like we accomplished a huge feat, when we made it to the over look. It was fairly cloudy so we didn't get to see much, but it was nice to make it. There is a ton of houses along the way... is there a site to see whats for sale and or rent? I think this would be a great retirement area for some of my family members!

Hi Francis: Thank you for your comments. We are in the process of forming a group called "Friends of Cavanal" that will help us put together volunteers that will help with trimming the trees and grass and the litter. This spring, there will be an outlook area that will be built that will allow visitors to walk out and get an even better view of the area.

From Francis Cavanal on 09/08/10

It sure would be alot better looking if someone would go out there and trim back trees and grass and maybe even fix potholes where erosion has taken over!

Cavanal Hill is the world's highest hill! The new pavillion area at the top has an awesome view. In the process of putting in live web cams you can view from www.poteauchamber.com- don't miss this view you can see into the next state and across the Ouachita Mountains
