Description
Latin for “high place" the city was renamed when it was moved to higher ground after a flood. Some have taken the name literally, serving as soldiers of the Altus Air Force Base. Others enjoy Altus' prime turkey, quail and dove hunting areas; the Morgan Doll Museum, a large private collection of antique dolls; and the Altus Speedway. Getaway to nearby Lake Altus-Lugert, which provides the scenic backdrop for the Quartz Mountain Resort Arts & Conference Center and Nature Park.
