Celebrate summer's arrival with Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center's Summer Solstice walks. These fun and fascinating guided tours are offered at Oklahoma's only prehistoric Native American archaeological site open to the public. Each tour will be one mile of easy walking and about two hours in duration. Archaeologist Dennis Peterson will talk about the mounds, the people who created them between A.D. 900-1450, how the people became a very important leadership group, the excavations that took place here and why some of the 12 mounds line up to solstice and equinox sunsets. The walk will reveal interesting history about the area. The 7pm walk will allow the observation of the sunset, which is the most important part of the event, and the twilight wildlife.
