Long championed as the first and only all-Indian operated cultural event of its kind, the American Indian Expo has garnered a wide variety of notoriety and acclaim over the years.

Visitors from across the nation and abroad have flocked to Anadarko each summer to witness the expo's colorful dance and pageant presentations. Princesses representing individual tribes are honored at this event each year. Since the late 1930s, many of the country’s most accomplished Native American artists have exhibited and sold their work to visitors of the expo.

Come to the American Indian Expo to enjoy contest dancing, a carnival, parades, dance contests, pageants, games, a fry bread contest, talent presentations, crafts, concessions and to immerse yourself in the history and ways of present-day Native American tribes. There will also be a poker run, an archery competition and plenty of delicious food.

I was born in June and attended the Fair in August, thank goodness mom didn't leave me at home. I met Jim Thorpe at 2 months of age, he was the Indian of the year. Yes, I'm that old. I try to go every year.

Christy, we have an entire article dedicated to tracing your Native American heritage. Although it is focused specifically on the Cherokee Tribe, it will tell you how to get started. The first step is gathering all birth and death certificates from your direct ancestors then checking the rolls, specifically the Dawes Roll. Read the full article by visiting www.travelok.com/article_page/tracing-your-cherokee-roots. Thank you for using TravelOK.com!

I am wondering if there will be anyone there to help me trace my family line. I have been trying for years to find someone to help. My grandparents have told us repeatedly that we are indian, but I am unable to find any information beyond my grandparents. I just need help and can not seem to find any. I would love to be able to tell my boys for sure whether or not we are and would love to know what tribe. Please help.

Is this an open pow-wow? I am un-enrolled Seneca and have competed at GON, Red Earth, Denver, etc. I am a Golden Age Straight Dancer who lives in Atlanta GA. We will be coming to OK during that time. Should I bring my dance clothes or will be welcome only as spectators?

The American Indian Expo is the most awesome event and we love Anadarko. We found it by accident in 2008 and have attended it every year since except for last year and were very sad we missed it. We will be there this year. We have already got the RV packed.!
