For the first time, Alabaster Caverns State Park in Freedom will be offering a five-day-long science camp (Mission: Exploration - A Science Experience) to be held June 10 thru 14, 2013, and based on the P.A.S.S. criteria set up by the Oklahoma State Board of Education. It is geared toward those students who are passing into the 7th and 8th grades.
The camp will be limited to only twenty students; ten male and ten female. The all-inclusive tuition will be $200 (meals, learning materials, and camp T-shirt included). The following three paragraphs should give you an overview of the camp and its expectations:

Mission: Exploration - A Science Experience is a cooperative, educational venture between the University of Central Oklahoma and Alabaster Caverns State Park. It is based at the University’s Selman Living Laboratory located in northwest Oklahoma near the town of Freedom. Its purpose is to give middle school students the opportunity to explore some of the unique natural ecosystems we have, not only in Oklahoma but in this country, and in a setting that will enhance the student’s ability to learn and retain the information available.
The programs selected for Mission: Exploration - A Science Experience were chosen for their ability to align themselves with the Oklahoma State Department of Education’s PASS (Priority Academic Student Skills) program. The classes offered at the Camp include astronomy, macro-invertebrates, geology, cave formation and safety, Project WET, animal adaptations, native plants, Oklahoma weather and storm tracking, bats of Oklahoma and bird habitats & identification. Areas of entertainment during the Camp will include a pool party, star party, tour of the beautiful Alabaster Caverns, Selman Bat Flight Viewing, selenite crystal digging and a chance to explore an undeveloped cave.
The staff for Mission: Exploration - A Science Experience is made up of professionals in their respective fields of study. They are selected especially for their ability to interact with young people in a meaningful and educational way. Many are involved in not only educating people but in the field of research. Those entities represented on the Camp Staff include Alabaster Caverns State Park, American Red Cross, KWTV Channel 9 Weather Team, National Speleological Society, National Caves Association, Oklahoma Bat Coordinating Team, Oklahoma Conservation Commission, Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department, Rogers County Conservation District, United States Department of Agriculture and the University of Central Oklahoma.
