Hard Times Festival
Oct 14, 2017
Venture into the small town of Hartshorne during the city's Hard Times Festival and be transported back into the Depression era of the late 1920s and '30s. Join the citizens of Hartshorne as they celebrate the enduring spirit of those who survived the trying years of the Great Depression. Enjoy a variety of cheap eats including burgers and homemade pies as you share the streets with gangsters, hobos and various citizens in period dress. The downtown area will be filled with street performers depicting Depression era preachers, newsboys, farmers and coal miners.
Recall the Depression years of the 1930s by participating in old-fashioned relay races, contests and more. Witness a period-style fashion show, browse through handmade arts and crafts or marvel at the bygone engineering of antique cars and tractors. A quilt show featuring prime examples of the art form will be on display, and mule-drawn wagon rides will be available to festival-goers. Other events at Hartshorne's Hard Times Festival have included a 1930s hat display, apron exhibit, bonnet display, canned goods display, square dancers, a rock contest and plenty of old-fashioned games.
In addition to these festivities, music will be performed by local artists and guest performers throughout the day. Tap your toes to the sounds of country, bluegrass, gospel and blues music. Attend the festival's Poor Man's Supper to feast on beans and cornbread, or join the fun at the annual Roadhouse Dance and dance the night away to period music. Remember the hard times of the Depression era at Hartshorne's Hard Times Festival and celebrate the people who made it through with a smile on their face and lived to see better days.
