The main attraction at Little Sahara State Park is dune buggy and ATV riding across the sand dunes. Visitors can either bring their own ATV or rent one off-site by a private vendor. Either way, visitors will have a blast in this mini-desert atmosphere, known as one of the best riding spots for ATVs in the Midwest.  The cost is $10 a day per driver to enter the dunes.  Those who bring their own vehicle to Little Sahara State Park are required to follow park rules and regulations.

PARK SAFETY RULES AND REGULATIONS:

All vehicles must have a whip attached to the ORV that extends 10 feet from the ground to the top of the whip.

All vehicles must have a 6" x 12" flag attached within 10" of the whip's tip.  It must be bright solid orange in color with no writing.

All vehicles must have a bright white front and red rear lights powered by the vehicle for night use.

Dune buggies and 4x4 vehicles must have a roll bar sufficient to support the weight of the vehicle and must have a seat belt for each passenger.

Full coverage helmets are strongly suggested.  Riding is at your own risk.  Please stay within the posted park boundaries.

All operators under the age of 18 must wear a helmet.

Double riding is not allowed on ATVs unless the vehicle is specifically manufactured for a passenger.

I was at that site about 55 yrs ago. It was totally undeveloped an we were attracted by the camels we saw there. I have never figured out where they came from.

From TravelOK.com Staff on 06/30/15

Brenda, we are so sorry to hear about your experience at the park. If you ever encounter this again, we would really appreciate it if you will alert the camp host or the park manager during your visit so you can have the site you paid for. If you don't see a member of the park staff in person, please feel free to call the park office at 580-824-1471. Thank you for using TravelOK.com.

From Brenda Dingman on 06/29/15

Love going to the dunes with our sandrails and friends. HATE the reservation system. I got online, made reservations for 4 camp areas in Buttercup camp for this past weekend Fri and Sat night. When the first arrivals of our group got there someone was parked in one of the areas I had reserved and refused to move. Wound up with one of the campers in our group separated from the rest of our group by the inconsiderate people. What is more, they stated they had been parked in the spot since Monday the 22nd and had not been charged any money at all. Love the fact that I paid for someone I had never met to camp and the 4th parties in our group had to pay for camping in a separate part.

From TravelOK.com Staff on 06/29/15

Michael, Jeeps are allowed on the dunes. However, if you have an older Jeep Comanche, Cherokee or similar model then you would need to provide proof the vehicle has an internal roll structure sufficient to meet the park rules. If you have a CJ style Jeep it will have a visible roll structure. If you have any other questions, please call the park office at 580-824-1471. Thank you for using TravelOK.com!

From Michael on 06/25/15

However, if you don't want to make a reservation, you are still welcome to come and set up on one of the first come, first serve sites. To book a site, please click the green 'Book RV Campsites' button at the top of this page, and if you have any questions feel free to call the park office at 580-824-1471. Have a great day and thank you for using TravelOK.com!

Is the campground open this weekend

From TravelOK.com Staff on 01/15/15

Cody, the campground is open this weekend. In order to use the online reservation system, you need to make your reservations at least five days in advance, so that's why it wasn't showing any spots. All remaining sites are available on a first come, first serve basis. If you have any questions, please feel free to call the park office at 580-824-1471. Have a great trip and thank you for using TravelOK.com!

From Paul on 12/22/14

Where can I rent an ATV and what is the minimum age for a driver?

From TravelOK.com Staff on 12/15/14

Doug, that's a great question! 4x4 trucks are allowed in the dunes; however, there are some things to note. Because the rules require a roll structure, only trucks that are 1995 or newer OR trucks that are older than 1995 with a visible roll structure are allowed. In addition, if your vehicle gets stuck, you are responsible for getting it off on your own, as the park does not have any means of assistance. You'll also have to follow the park rules and regulations listed under the orange 'Read More' button above. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call the park office at 580-824-1471. Have a great day and thank you for using TravelOK.com!

From Doug on 12/13/14

Hi,I don't see any pictures of 4x4 trucks on your site. Are they allowed in dunes? thinking of coming down over Christmas break to check it out . Thanks and have a Merry Christmas!

From TravelOK.com Staff on 11/25/14

Marshall, for that information you'll need to speak with someone at the park office. Please give them a call at 580-824-1471. Have a great day and thank you for using TravelOK.com!

From marshall on 11/24/14

Hi, I'd like to shoot a short 30 second scene for a student film in the dunes, not ride. The crew would only be 2-3 people. Is this sort of thing allowed? It'd only be a single camera on a single tripod, not anything big.

From blake withrow on 11/09/14

i think its awesone

From TravelOK.com Staff on 11/05/14

Crystal, the dunes are in a fenced in area with gates that lead out to the RV sites and campgrounds. ATV riding is kept within the gates and on the sand dunes. There is also a half a mile long observation deck from the north campground where you can get a good view of the dunes without being next to ATV riders. Best wishes and thanks for using TravelOK.com!

From Crystal on 11/03/14

Are there areas closed to ATVs where children can safely explore? Thank you

From TravelOK.com Staff on 10/15/14

Efrain, as far as paying for your RV site, you can reserve a spot ahead of time by using the green 'Book RV Campsites' button above and pay that way. You can also show up at the park and pull into any available spot and a member of the park staff will come collect payment in the morning. There is only one office to pay for camping, RV sites and wristbands for the dunes. The dunes are open 24 hours, so if you park at the north RV site there will be staff there during the day at the gate to the dunes to collect payment and provide a wristband. Best wishes and thanks for using TravelOK.com!

From Efrain on 10/11/14

How can I pay to ride in the park and or the RV spot if I arrived in the midle of the night? Also if I camp at the north site RV site, How to pay to get in the dunes from those locations? Looking for a campsite for sept 26 thru 28 2014 with electric & water

From TravelOK.com Staff on 09/05/14

John, unfortunately there are no full hookup sites with sewer at Little Sahara State Park, but there are dump stations available. At this time, we're only able to display either 30 amp or 50 amp in the reservation system, though most sites do offer both. In the Cowboy Campground for instance, all sites have both. If you're interested in a certain site, feel free to call the park office at 580-824-1471 to get more information. Have a great day and thank you for using TravelOK.com!

From John on 09/02/14

Looking to bring my 30 AMP bumper pull down around Oct. 2-5th. Are there full hookup sites with sewer available? If a site says 50 AMP does it also have 30 AMP?

I'm looking for information on the cabins for rent at the State Park...I only see information on the rv sites to reserve? Any info is appreciated, thank you!

From TravelOK.com Staff on 08/21/14

Chet, it's entirely possible to ride from the motel in town to the park. Please keep in mind that while on the trail, ATV riders must follow all the rules as motor vehicle drivers. Riders must follow the orange stripe on the trail and can ride only one in a lane in low gear not to exceed 10 miles per hour. Riders can be on the trail for no longer than 30 minutes after sunset. The trail is co-managed by the City of Waynoka and Little Sahara State Park. The park itself is open 24 hours a day. For more information, please call either the park office at 580-824-1471 or city hall at 580-824-2261. Best wishes and thank you for using TravelOK.com!

From Chet on 08/21/14

Is there a trail to ride from the campgrounds to the motel in town? If so, are there restrictions on when you can ride the trail? Thanks!

From Melissa W. on 08/19/14

Their Safety Rules and Regulations do nothing to keep you safe or advise you of the dangers of riding at the dunes. If you are not familiar with riding on sand, the drop-offs are not easy to see and can catch you by surprise. They have no rider safety meetings, such as you have at paintball or any other sport. My son was killed here in 2005. It is not unusual for them to have 2-3 deaths here a year. If you are injured or hurt, emergency vehicles cannot get to you quickly, and the nearest hospital is not equipped to handle a lot of the injuries. Please be aware and be careful out there!

From TravelOK.com Staff on 07/27/14

From Jeff on 06/11/14

Are there any maps showing the layout of the campgrounds with campsite numbers? Thanks for any help.

From Buddy Cox on 06/05/14

Be sure you don't have to cancel camping reservations. They DO NOT refund. No where on the Confirmation does it say reservation has to be cancelled longer than ten days before reservation date. ALSO cannot rent a ATV except for 1/2 day in June. That makes it too expensive to visit this park. Sorry, BUT VERY UNSATISFIED.

From TravelOK.com Staff on 05/01/14

From Megan on 03/13/14

I love the sand dunes! My family has been going there for decades! It is such a wonderful family fun vacation!

From TravelOK.com Staff on 03/05/14

Luis, generally sand boarding is not allowed because it is too dangerous when the park is busy. However, if the park is relatively empty - like on a Monday or Tuesday, not during Spring Break - the staff will allow you to sand board. Please call ahead at 580-824-1471 to verify that it will be safe for you to sand board. Have a great day and thank you for using TravelOK.com!

From Luis on 03/04/14

Is sand boarding allowed? Or is the park strictly for motorized vehicles?

From TravelOK.com Staff on 03/04/14

Rachel, the $10 fee is only for ATV drivers, regardless of where they're coming from. There is no fee for ATV passengers or those who just want to view the sand dunes. If you have any questions, please call 580-824-1471. Best wishes and thank you for using TravelOK.com!

From Rachel on 03/01/14

I see there is a $10 fee per day per driver. Does that fee go up if I'm from out of state?

From TravelOK.com Staff on 02/26/14

Ryan, thanks for your question! The restrooms and showers will be open again on February 28, 2014. If you have any questions, please call 580-824-1471. Best wishes and thank you for using TravelOK.com!

From James Nelson on 02/23/14

Is there a fee to enter the park? I am 86 years old, I don't want to ride any ATV but I would like to see the sand dunes and take some pictures.

From JP on 02/23/14

From J Clark on 12/02/13

If you are staying at LSPS and book a spot online I would suggest calling before you come because they do not have a good system. We pulled in late Wed night after a 9 hour drive to find someone else in our spot who was told by the camp host a day before that the spot wax available. Also the dump station is ridiculous. We pulled up today to find someone else's solids and toilet paper and abandoned hose all strewn about. Figure out how to dump properly so the rest of us don't have to see it. Also why is there a non-functioning hydrant at the dump station? Please fix it. Awesome riding and weather!

From Wes Williams on 12/02/13

ATVing was a great time but the camping sites are lacking attention for as much money as this park brings in. 1 site the faucet was broken and water was running on the ground and the dump station was deplorable and had no water for dumping and will overflow when you are dumping if you do not watch and shut off your tanks from draining. I know the water issues have existed for the last 3 weeks as a friend told me of the issues 3 weeks ago. I now have to go to Tenkiller State Park to pay 10 bucks to clean my tanks, I think we need a refund for some of these added costs! Please do the badly needed maintenance on your camping and dump station area.

From Chris Grindstaff on 11/06/13

This place is the best ever. It's a favorite past time. And this school year might be the last time I will be with my Dad's friends and my Dad. It's going to be sad to leave home as I go to face the world head on.

From TravelOK.com Staff on 10/29/13

Rhonda, sorry but we just don't know the answer to that! You would have to dig down very, very far before you hit dirt. We hope you'll have a chance to visit someday! Have a great day and thank you for using TravelOK.com!

From rhonda matthews on 10/29/13

I was having a conversation with a friend who had been there. I was curious as to the depth of sand. Your site mentions height up to 75 of dunes. But, if you where drilling how far be for you hit dirt?

From TravelOK.com Staff on 10/23/13

Matt, there are no upcoming events, but the park staff said that October is a very busy month with fall breaks and cooler weather. They should be busy on weekends up through Thanksgiving as long as the weather stays good. If you have any questions, please call 580-824-1471. Have a great day and thank you for using TravelOK.com!

From Todd Greenlee on 10/07/13

I recently lost my backpack at Little Sahara. It is black and contains a laptop along with an external hardrive. These things are very very important to me because they contain footage for a movie I was filming around the entire state of Oklahoma. If anyone knows anything about this please email me at todd.f.greenlee@gmail.com. I will be very grateful for any information. The people at Little Sahara have been awesome at helping me search for it. Thanks.

How much does it cost to camp a nite

From TravelOK.com Staff on 07/29/13

Jon, Little Sahara State Park is open all year long. However, during the winter some of the campgrounds and/or comfort stations will be closed. We post all of the park's closures on this page, so we recommend you check back here or call the park directly before your trip. Their phone number is 580-824-1471. Best wishes and thank you for using TravelOK.com!

From Jon N on 07/27/13

Is the park open all year long?

From TravelOK.com Staff on 07/10/13

David, you are more than welcome to put a tent on a site with water and electric hookups. Please keep in mind that you are paying for the site rather than the specific sleeping unit, so the rates will be slightly higher. If you are interested in seeing what lodging properties are available near Little Sahara State Park, select 'Lodging within 5 miles' under the map feature on this page. If you have any questions, please contact the park at 580-824-1471. Have a great trip and thank you for using TravelOK.com!

From David E on 07/10/13

I am heading down there to the dunes the weekend of July 19th,next weekend. It is supposed to be in the 100's during the day and am concerned with the lack of getting cooled down at night. I have seen you mention that some sights have water and electric hookups. Are those for campers or tent sights? I would rather stay at the park but if it's going to be that hot might need to find some lodging to cool down.

From Kimmy Jensen on 06/16/13

Me Kim and been! Sand! Good! Need sand? Here!

From TravelOK.com Staff on 06/14/13

Travis, Little Sahara State Park does not offer weekend passes, but there are yearly passes available, which are $200 for the first family member and $125 for each additional immediate family member. Please call 580-824-1471 if you have any questions. Best wishes and thank you for using TravelOK.com!

From Travis Clevenger on 06/13/13

Is it $10 per day drivers fee or can you get a weekend pass?

From TravelOK.com Staff on 05/22/13

Dane, the $10 fee is charged for each driver, so you could drive your wife or child with just the $10 fee. If you and your wife wanted to take turns driving, it would be $10 for each of you. Camping fees are separate. Sites are $12 per night and sites with water and electric hookups are $20 per night. Sites are available on a first come, first serve basis, but cabins and lodge rooms can be reserved in advance. If you have any questions, please call 580-824-1471. Best wishes and thank you for using TravelOK.com!

From Dane Allred on 05/22/13

Does the $10 fee cover camp spots and everything. it states $10 per rider. if my wife and child don't ride am i still required to pay the entry fee for them?

From TravelOK.com Staff on 05/10/13

Tyson, you can rent an ORV at Stewart's ATV & Buggy. PJ, a primitive tent or RV camp site is $12.00 per night. For a semi-modern site, which includes electric and water, the rate is $20.00 per night. If you’d like a modern site, which includes electric, sewer and water, the rate is $23.00 per night. Some parks offer premium sites, like those at water’s edge, for an additional $5.00 fee per night. Currently, we do not have a reservation system in place for campsites, but that is something that we hope to implement this year. For more information, please contact Little Sahara State Park directly at 580-824-1471. Best wishes and thank you for using TravelOK.com!

Thompsons, we're so glad that you have had such good experiences at Little Sahara State Park! As to your winterization question, the park staff will shut off the water and close the campgrounds during the winter to keep pipes from bursting, etc. The north campgrounds will be closed from the dates above usually through sometime around March. For more information, please contact the park directly at 580-824-1471. Thank you for using TravelOK.com!

From The Thompsons on 12/02/12

We visit LS 10 times a year on average and have been very impressed each time, for they have made improvements each time we go back. It's funny to see such negativity from others when I observe the staff taking care of the place, and then see fellow campers leaving trash behind when there's PLENTY of dump locations AND they're not cumbersome to get to or smelly and filthy. I'm not sure what others are expecting when they go camping, however I'm always impressed with running water, doable facility cleanliness and your very own fire wood delivery guy!! HECK YEAH thanks Clint! Even in below freezing weather we have a blast and and it's not the spirit that keeps us warm and fuzzy.LoL It's the experience EVERY time. Question, what is the winterization process and how long does it take? We were hoping to visit Dec 15th at North Camp. We're actually heading home from there today!

From TravelOK.com Staff on 10/04/12

Efrain, no OHV stickers are required at Little Sahara State Park. For additional questions, please contact the state park directly at 580-824-1471. Best wishes and thank you for using TravelOK.com!

From Efrain on 10/03/12

Will a TX OHV sticker be accepted to ride at Little Sahara or do I need to purchase a Oklahoma OHV sticker. I do not see a requirement to have a OHV sticker in the requirements and rules statements information in the web page. I am under the assumption that no OHV sticker purchase is necessary to ride at the sand dunes. Please advise.

From owner on 09/28/12

Regina, The picture in question shows two adults, the helmet law applies to individuals under the age of 18.

From TravelOK.com Staff on 09/28/12

Efrain, Little Sahara State Park is such a fun place to visit. We're sure you'll have a great time. Unfortunately, none of the RV sites offer sewer hookups, but there are two dump stations within the park. The sand dunes are a year-round attraction, so it's hard to say when the best time would be. Of course, there will be less people visiting during the week than on the weekends. Have a great time at Little Sahara State Park and thank you for using TravelOK.com!

From Efrain on 09/27/12

Never been there and I am looking forward to visit and stay camping 4 or 5 days in a RV Toyhauler. When is the best time to visit? And it there are available full RV connection, electricity water and black water disposal connection without moving the RV to a dump station?

I love going to the little sahara. However, the state side has very bad facilities. The showers water temperature was over 130 degree's, it was scalding hot and could not be adjusted. the showers are have no curtains. also, the toilets have no locks and never got restocked. for $10/day to enter, they should have plenty of money to keep up. they kept the gate way over staffed all weekend too. it's not going to stop me from going back, we drive 6 hours to go. it would just be nice to step it up a notch.

From TravelOK.com Staff on 05/26/11

I visited this place as a kid. I remember waiting by the restrooms one afternoon when a relative went in. I heard something in the brush by the restroom and went to investigate. I'll never forget what peered around a bush and startled me, but no one believes me to this day. Is there any possibility that there are moose in the area? I know I didn't dream this. It was close enough to touch and frightened both of us enough that we went running in opposite directions. It was HUGE.
