Description

***WINTERIZATION NOTICE*** Buttercup and Cowboy camping areas and bathrooms closed beginning December 15.  ORV access will remain open at Buttercup and Golden Sands. Golden Sands RV camping and bathrooms will remain open and available.

A prime example of Oklahoma's diverse terrain, Little Sahara State Park boasts over 1,600 acres of sand dunes, ranging in height from 25 to 75 feet.  The vast dunes have formed over time from terrace deposits, remnants of prehistoric times when the Cimarron River flowed over the entire area.  Located south of Waynoka in northwest Oklahoma, the park offers amenities such as RV sites with water and electricity, tent sites, picnic areas and showers.  Concessions are offered in the park seasonally, and groceries and fuel are available nearby.

The main attraction at Little Sahara State Park is dune buggy and ATV riding across the sand dunes.  Dune buggy and ATV rentals are available to visitors, or they can bring their own. Either way, visitors will have a blast in this mini-desert atmosphere, known as one of the best riding spots for ATVs in the Midwest.  Those who bring their own vehicle to Little Sahara State Park are required to have a whip attached, extending 10 feet from the ground to the top of the whip, and a 6 inch by 12 inch, bright orange, letter and image-free flag on the end of the whip.  All side-by-side vehicles must have a roll structure sufficient to support the weight of the vehicle.

Little Sahara State Park hosts events throughout the year, including Snake Hunt Weekend.  Rattlesnakes are captured, measured and weighed.  Then, prizes are given for various categories including longest snake and heaviest snake.  SandFest, another event held in the park and in downtown Waynoka, offers drag racing, off-roading and ATV demonstrations on the dunes. Kids will be delighted to play in the giant manmade sandbox on Main Street in Waynoka or participate in the sand castle building contest.  A duck race, hot dog contest and lawnmower race are other unique activities to take part in or watch during SandFest.

From Wallace Family on 10/17/2011

Husband all ways went with a bunch of guys, finally one year he took me...It's a 6hr drive and we went 3 weekends in a row. I couldn't get enough. We now go at least 3x's a year and each year we bring someone new down with us. We now have a huge following. The camp sites are clean and the bathrooms always seem to be well taken care of. Just a shot out to everyone. If you drop your water bottle or broke something out on the dunes.. pick it up.. lets keep our duens clean and fun!!!

Are 2 wheel dirt bikes allowed? Are spark arresters USFS required? 365 days open? Your article mentions ATV a lot, but not bikes.

Those who bring their own vehicle to Little Sahara State Park are required to have a whip attached, extending 10 feet from the ground to the top of the whip, and a 6-ft by 12-ft flag on the end of the whip. All dune buggies and 4 x 4 vehicles must have a roll bar. Did you read that 6 foot by 12 foot flag !!!!! PLEASE UPDATE YOUR INFORMATION!!

From Ryan on 06/06/2011

I love going to the little sahara. However, the state side has very bad facilities. The showers water temperature was over 130 degree's, it was scalding hot and could not be adjusted. the showers are have no curtains. also, the toilets have no locks and never got restocked. for $10/day to enter, they should have plenty of money to keep up. they kept the gate way over staffed all weekend too. it's not going to stop me from going back, we drive 6 hours to go. it would just be nice to step it up a notch.

From TravelOK.com Staff on 05/26/2011

Lucy, a camp site with electric and water will run $20.00 per night. The sites are first come, first served. If you have other questions about the park, please call them directly using the contact information above. We hope you have a great time at this one-of-a-kind place and thank you for using TravelOK.com.

From Jay on 04/23/2011

I visited this place as a kid. I remember waiting by the restrooms one afternoon when a relative went in. I heard something in the brush by the restroom and went to investigate. I'll never forget what peered around a bush and startled me, but no one believes me to this day. Is there any possibility that there are moose in the area? I know I didn't dream this. It was close enough to touch and frightened both of us enough that we went running in opposite directions. It was HUGE.

From Jason on 04/08/2011
