Let the Museum of Western Prairie in Altus enlighten you about how pioneers settled the vast American landscape. This museum shares the powerful and vibrant history of Native Americans, trail bosses, cowboys, ranchers and homesteaders who settled the area. Two large galleries at the museum are filled with inspiring exhibits, and the museum also showcases an authentic half dugout, an 1891 ranch house, a working windmill and pioneer farm equipment.

The Museum of the Western Prairie's collection of more than 35,000 artifacts and photographs allows visitors to not only read about the history of the area but experience it for themselves. Visitors can learn about topics from geologic uplifts and ancient seas to irrigated farming and the Altus Air Force Base. Guided tours are available with advance notice.
