March Events Kick off Green Country’s Tourism Season

Green Country’s tourism season is getting a jump start with the lineup of March events scheduled in communities across the 18-county region. From home and garden shows to world-class performances and even boat and dog shows, events in Green Country are not waiting for summer to attract visitors to northeastern Oklahoma. Here are some of the area’s highlights.

If you haven’t visited the Black Gold: Oil! Nellie Johnstone #1 exhibit at the Bartlesville Area History Museum, you have until April 30 to enjoy some fascinating state history. Also, be sure to check out the activities and exhibits at the Price Tower Arts Center. Performances at the beautiful Community Center in March include the Santa Cruz River Band on the 3rd and Hairspray on the 4th. Woolaroc’s Mountain Man Camp at Crystal Lake opens on the 29th and continues through May 26th. There’s also an Easter Egg Hunt on the Woolaroc Museum grounds on the 22nd.

In Broken Arrow, you’ll find the Third Annual Entrepreneurship Expo on the 1st, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol Boating Education class at Bass Pro Shops on the 1st, Faurot’s Fishing Frenzy with Dick Faurot on Uncle Buck’s Pond at Bass Pro Shops on the 8th, and the Polar Plunge at Bass Pro Shops on the 8th. This event is a fundraising challenge for the Oklahoma Special Olympics. Also, the Broken Arrow campus of Northeastern State University hosts a Job Fair on the 15th.

Claremore is a busy city with the Irving Berlin’s “I Love a Piano” at the Robson Performing Arts Center on the 8th, a ham radio festival at the Expo Center the 13th-15th, the Optimist Club’s Annual Easter Egg Hunt on the 22nd and the 12th Annual Dog Iron Classic Dog Show at the Expo Center the 27th-30th.

Grove is ready for lake activities to begin and proves it with its 11th Annual Grand Lake Boat and Sport Show from the 14-16th.

Haskell’s Stone Bluff Cellars celebrates St. Patrick’s Day and the promise of spring with Top O’ the Morning Brunch on the 16th and a Family Field Trip Day, with kites, fishing and adventure for the whole family on the 29th.

Jenks is welcoming spring with a host of events including Play with the Champions Golf Tournament on the 25th and an Easter Egg Hunt on the 22nd. The city’s Oklahoma Aquarium is a busy place this month with the Grand Opening of the Hayes Family Ozark Stream from the 7th-9th; Lights Out Luau, 7th and 8th; Spring Break Sea Camp, 17th-21st; Scout Day, 18th; and Homeschool Day on the 26th.

Miami’s Coleman Theatre hosts a Gospel Concert to benefit the homeless on the 15th and J.R.’s Rubber Band on the 22nd. The Buffalo Run Casino welcomes several entertaining groups this month, so check out their offerings too. Northeastern Oklahoma State University’s library will be the home of a 1996 Olympic Torch until May 9.

Ponca City hosts a Fly-In Breakfast at the airport on the 1st; the 101 Ranch Collectors Western Memorabilia Show on the 22nd; and a City-Wide Garage Sale on the 29th.

Tahlequah and March go hand in hand for such events as Kite Flight and Family Fun Day at Western Hills Guest Ranch on the 1st and the Ranch’s Easter Weekend Celebration on the 23rd. Easter in the Park is on the 22nd at Tenkiller State Park with Easter Sunrise Services there on the 23rd. Indian Territory Days takes you back in time on the 27th and 28th. The Cherokee Heritage Center is always an interesting destination. Be sure to check into its Basketry Class on the 1st, Flute Making Class on the 7th and 8th, the Tahlequah Native American Flute Circle on the 21st and the Pottery Class on the 29th.

Of course Tulsa, Green Country’s largest city, offers a variety of March events including Annie, 4th-9th, and The Wailin Jennys, 8th, at the Performing Arts Center. Sesame Street Live comes to the Mabee Center the 27th -30th, and gardeners will love the Greater Tulsa Home and Garden Show from the 6th-9th.

Then there are Tulsa Zoo events promising fun and adventure for all ages. Be sure to check out their web site for all of the fun events springing up in March such as Go on Safari, Feather Fest and Zooper Fun Pass.

Don’t forget the many fine Tulsa museums, all with a full schedule of exhibits and events. Gilcrease, Philbrook and the Sherwin Miller Museum of Jewish Art have a variety of exhibits on display and events ranging from lectures to genealogy workshops. The Tulsa Historical Society offers Oklahoma Outlaws Bus Tour on the 11th that is sure to please history buffs.

Wagoner’s Canebrake Resort offers exciting live music on the 5th, 12th, 19th and 26th and Oklahoma Wine Tasting on the 25th. Also, be sure to check out the resort’s exquisite rooms and suites, ropes course and yoga retreats.
