Art Museum to Waive Admission for Toilet Paper
By Tourism Industry Partner
Shawnee, OK—From November 5 to November 21, the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art will give visitors free admission if they bring a new, unwrapped roll of toilet paper to the museum.
“I know it sounds crazy,” admitted MGMoA Curator of Education, Donna Merkt, “but it’s for a good cause.” The toilet paper will be donated to Family Promise of Shawnee, an organization that helps homeless families with children.
Family Promise is the museum’s benefiting partner for the annual regional art exhibit.
This year’s exhibit, A Promise of Home, features artworks by over 30 artists from Shawnee, Oklahoma City, Tulsa, and the surrounding communities. Each of these artists created artworks dealing with the ideas of home or homelessness.
“The show is quite varied,” said Merkt. “The two themes create a sense of contrast, which is exactly what we were hoping for. That gap between home and homelessness is what Family Promise seeks to bridge.” Merkt also mentioned that the artworks in the show are not just varied as far as theme, but also in their interpretations of the themes. “Some people looked at the idea of home and painted a house, while others painted the dinner table--one artist even built a desk. Some broached the idea of homelessness by emphasizing cardboard boxes, while others photographed abandoned objects or animals.”
To receive free admission to the Promise of Home exhibit and the museum’s permanent exhibits, bring a new, unwrapped personal paper product (paper towels, toilet paper, facial tissues) or personal hygiene product (soap, shampoo, toothbrushes, hand sanitizer, etc.) to the museum. All of the products collected by the museum will be donated to Family Promise of Shawnee who will distribute them to the homeless families with children participating in their programs.
Everyone is invited to celebrate the opening of the exhibition at 7pm on Friday, November 5. Refreshments will be provided by the MGMoA volunteer society. The opening is free and open to the public, but everyone is encouraged to bring personal paper products or hygiene products to kick off the drive for Family Promise.
