Saturday, March 26, the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art is offering a basket weaving workshop for adults and students ages 16 and up. In this class, taught by veteran basket-weaver Pauline Asbury, students will learn several basic basket weaving techniques including: laying out a solid base with "chicken feet," twining, start/stop weaving, triple twining, folding and tucking, placement and lashing of a rim, and cross-stitch design embellishment. Students will take home a beautiful, hand-woven 10" x 15" solid-bottom market basket embellished with a cross-stitch design.
Pauline Asbury has been involved with crafts all her life; yet, in 1999, she found her true interest, basketry. She is a free-style weaver who exhibits and demonstrates regularly at fairs, markets, libraries, art galleries, and Basket Weavers' Guild events. Pauline's experience teaching deaf children has given her the ability to reduce complex weaving to simple steps which are expertly conveyed to her students.
This workshop is open to participants ages 16-106. It is appropriate for beginning, intermediate, and experienced crafters. The class begins at 10:00 a.m., will break an hour for lunch, and will end at 4:00 p.m. Participants may bring lunches or eat out.
Advance registration for the workshop registration is required. The deadline for registration is March 23.
Those interested are encouraged to register right away, as the workshop is expected to fill quickly. The cost for the workshop is $65 for museum members, $75 for non-members, and $70 for seniors and teachers. All supplies and equipment is included in the tuition fee. Registration is open now.
