“BioBlitz” Event at Chickasaw National Recreation Area

SULPHUR, Oklahoma: The Chickasaw National Recreation Area, in conjunction with the Oklahoma Biological Survey will host “BioBlitz! Oklahoma 2011” on October 14 and 15. BioBlitz! is a fun and educational event that invites volunteers to participate in a rapid inventory of biological diversity of Oklahoma’s natural areas. Expert biologists and citizen scientists will count as many species as possible in 24 hours at the national recreation area near Sulphur, Okla.
Biologists and knowledgeable amateurs will lead citizen scientists on a hands-on, 24-hour biodiversity adventure. Anyone interested in learning more about Oklahoma’s biodiversity can register as a citizen scientist. BioBlitz! regularly attracts families and college students, high-school groups, retirees, home-schoolers and scout troops. Anyone interested can register for a small fee and will receive free tent camping and an event T-shirt. Pre-registration is required and available online or by calling (405)325-7658.
The BioBlitz’s! goal is to encourage Oklahomans to appreciate the biological diversity found in our state. BioBlitz! offers a hands-on scientific experience and a chance to learn more about the natural diversity right where we live.
On Friday evening, October 14, and all day Saturday, October 15, biologists will lead educational activities, including night-time insect trapping; bird walks; seining for fish; learning about Oklahoma’s snakes; collecting aquatic invertebrates; identifying plants; and more. The inventory concludes at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday with a celebration of Oklahoma’s biodiversity, the serving of cake, and announcement of inventory totals and highlights.
