McAlester main street christmas parade of lights
mcalester, OK, November 17, 2011: McAlester Main Street Christmas Parade of Lights will take place in downtown McAlester at 7:00 PM on December 1st sponsored by: PSO, BEMAC, Chaney Harkins Funeral Home, and McAlester Arts & Humanities.
McAlester Main Street Director Carol Ervin announced today that Oklahoma City attorney and Edmond Sun columnist William O’Brien will be one of the judges for the Parade of Lights “Winter Wonderland” O’Brien has travelled throughout Europe, Africa, and parts of Asia, and has written extensively about Oklahoma’s Main Street communities revitalization efforts in his weekly column for the Edmond Sun. He has often made comparisons in his column to places he has travelled to and the unique features of the Oklahoma Main Street towns that he has visited. O’Brien has written about McAlester, Wilburton, and Okmulgee in the past year, and his columns are available at the Edmond Sun website. Metal Christmas ornaments made by artist Wengai Kahuni will be awarded to the top three parade contestants. Kahuni is originally from Zimbabwe in Southern Africa, but now makes his home in Oklahoma City, Ervin said. There are also cash prizes totaling over $600 for the top 3 in “Winter Wonderland” McAlester Main Street Parade of Lights. The parade will travel from East to West on Choctaw St marking the beginning of the Christmas season in downtown McAlester, and will showcase the renovations that are transforming the downtown McAlester area. McAlester Main Street is unique in the Oklahoma Main Street communities as having 2 Main Street Districts under one program. With Downtown and Old Town as well as the recently adopted temporary sales tax rebate incentive for businesses located inside the districts and the Choctaw Corridor downtown. The City of McAlester is leading other Main Street communities with proactive support.
