KAW LAKE, OK. - (June 16, 2010) – KawFest Polynesian: Poker, Pork and Polynesian Dancers is the theme of the 17th annual KawFest to be held Saturday, June 25 at Sandy Beach at Kaw Lake.  Kaw Lake is located in northcentral Oklahoma, eight miles east of Ponca City, OK.  Featured that evening will be a Polynesian Dance Troupe from Tulsa.  Hula Halau O LeiLani has performed in Oklahoma since 2002 under the direction of Leilani Sheldon as Kumu Hula. The halau of 40+ haumana (students) performs various beautiful and colorful dances from the Hawaiian Islands including kahiko, the ancient style of hula; awana, the contemporary hula and hapa haole, hula with English lyrics. Also included in the repertory are dances from Tahiti and New Zealand. This highly acclaimed dance troupe has performed for many enthusiastic audiences all around the Tulsa area and always leaves them wanting more.


            “Hula is a transforming experience. You feel such harmony that engulfs your entire body and lifts your spirit,“ said Leilani Sheldon.


            Sandy Beach will open Saturday morning at 10 am for fun on the beach.  Admission is $1 per person.  Teams will get their cookers going cooking the pork for tasting later in the day.


            The Boat Poker Run will begin at 1 p.m. with registration at McFadden Cove Marina.   First out is 1 p.m. and last out is 3 p.m.  Entry fee is $25 per hand and $15 for each additional hand.  First place is 30% of entry and second place, 10% of entry fee with $50 paid to the worst hand.  Stops will be McFadden Cove Marina, Osage Cove Dock, Sarge Creek Dock, Washunga Bay Dock and ending at Sandy Beach.  Awards are at 5:30 pm at Sandy Beach.


            Teams entering the Pork Cook off will begin cooking early that morning.  Tasting for the Pork Cook off will begin at 6 pm.  Those purchasing tasting kits for $6 will have the opportunity to vote for the “People’s Choice” winner.  The winner will be announced at 7:30 p.m. just prior to the Polynesian Dancers entertainment.
