MAINSITE Contemporary Art Becomes Home for the Norman Arts Council
By Tourism Industry Partner
NORMAN, Ok. – The MAINSITE Contemporary Art gallery in the historic downtown of Norman, Oklahoma will have new residents as of July 1st. Owner Gary Clinton is giving the Norman Arts Council (NAC) the unique opportunity to not only office in the space, but also to maintain the vision and purpose of the gallery as a contemporary art space.
“Moving into MAINSITE is an exciting time for the Norman Arts Council,” said Erinn Gavaghan, NAC Executive Director. “Not only is this move allowing us to have an event space, but also is providing a space for the community as a whole. New programming and event opportunities are going to be opening up for the NAC and Norman artists.”
The NAC Board of Directors along with the NAC staff have been developing an Individual Artist Program, future community educational arts programming, as well as building upon MAINSITE’s current purpose to further contemporary art in the city, state, and region.
The NAC is currently housed in the Arvest Professional Building in the 200 block of Main Street. The NAC moved from 223 East Main Street into the current office in 2008.
“This will be the first chance we have had in three years to have a street presence and be able to interact with the Norman community on a daily basis,” said Gavaghan.
Opportunities for others exist as well. The NAC is currently accepting applications for interns for the Fall 2011 and Spring 2012 sessions. Internships are available in Public Relations and Media as well as Gallery Administration.
“We are excited for the chance to provide the space for the NAC, and we are thrilled to be assisting the educational opportunities of the students and universities in the area,” said Christian Pitt, current MAINSITE gallerist and incoming NAC Board President.
MAINSITE Contemporary Art will now be known as “MAINSITE Contemporary Art: Home of the Norman Arts Council”.
The 2nd Friday Circuit of Art on July 8, 2011 will be the first public event held at the space under the direction of the NAC. The public is encouraged to attend to meet the staff and board of the NAC and ask questions about upcoming projects, events, and opportunities for artists and the community.
Norman Arts Council operational hours beginning July 5, 2011 will be 9:00am – 4:00pm Monday through Friday. Gallery hours will remain 11:30am – 5:00pm Wednesday through Saturday and every 2nd Friday Circuit of Art from 6:00pm – 9:00pm.
