Nationally Recognized Mask Artist to Present Workshop at Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art
By Tourism Industry Partner
Shawnee, OK— Renowned Oklahoma mask maker, G. Patrick Riley will present a leather mask workshop at the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art on Saturday, October 15, 2011.
Presently, Riley’s leather masks are featured in the current exhibit Magical Mystery Masks: The Art of G. Patrick Riley (September 9 - October 23). This is the second leather mask workshop that Riley has presented at the museum. His first was in 2008. According to MGMoA Curator of Education, Donna Merkt, the museum enjoys working with Riley and greatly appreciates his talent as an artist and art educator.
“I was quite amazed at the masks that the amateur mask makers created in his last workshop and am excited to see what is created under Patrick’s direction this time,” exclaimed Merkt.
Masks seem to abound currently at the museum, as they are the subject of the current museum exhibition and will play a big role in the museum’s upcoming fundraiser, Bringing the World to Oklahoma: Venice, on December 2. Merkt explained that some will choose to wear masks at the gala as part of the Venetian carnevale theme and believes that Riley’s workshop will provide a great opportunity for those planning to attend the gala to create their own masks for the event.
The leather mask workshop is from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 15th in the MGMoA Volunteer’s Gallery. There is a one-hour lunch break. Participants may bring lunches or visit one of several nearby eateries. The workshop is open to anyone ages 16 and older. The registration fee covers all necessary supplies, though participants may bring personal items to adorn their masks if they so choose. Registration must be completed and tuition paid in full by October 10th to guarantee participation. No refunds will be given for cancellations occurring after October 10th. Participants may choose to create full or half masks. The tuition costs are $55-$75, depending on what type of masks is created. Discounts are offered for museum members, seniors, and teachers. For additional information and registration, please visit www.mgmoa.org/workshops, or call Donna Merkt at 405-878-5300.
