Oklahoma Tourism Dept. Launches Foursquare Page with Travel Tips

Oklahoma is only 3rd state in the nation with an official branded page

The Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department recently partnered with the social media site Foursquare to create an officially branded page for Oklahoma tourism information and traveler tips. The branded page, http://Foursquare.com/TravelOK, allows users to “check in” and unlock Oklahoma’s best kept secrets, find discounts and discover great places to explore.

Whether you’re looking for urban culture and nightlife, memorable road trip destinations, or outdoor adventure, Oklahoma has it all,” said Hardy Watkins, executive director, Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department. “The tourism applications for social media and Foursquare specifically are tremendous, and we are on the leading edge of these technologies to help spread the word about Oklahoma’s events and destinations.”

Foursquare is a mobile application that has nearly 3 million users worldwide. It was designed to help people explore cities, find friends nearby, discover new things and reward them for doing so. The application is designed within a game structure that lets users “check in” to a place when they arrive, tell friends where they are and leave tips along the way. Users earn badges and unlock discounts, honors and more.

The TravelOK Foursquare page is full of tips and recommendations on everything from destination dining to museums to events across the state. It will continue to build over time and there are plans for contests, discounts and more, the first of which will take place at the Oklahoma State Fair which runs Sept. 16-26 in Oklahoma City.

Foursquare users should visit the Oklahoma Tourism Department’s booth in the Oklahoma Expo Hall. Check in and complete an entry form for a chance to win an iPod Touch courtesy of the Oklahoma Restaurant Association.
