Poteau Presents Annual Citywide Trash Off
The Poteau Chamber of Commerce & The City of Poteau Presents 8th Annual City Wide Trash Off
If you’re looking for a way to make a difference in your community, here it is! It’s time to gather your family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, club members, church members or whoever you can to help participate in the 2012 8th Annual City Wide Trash Off! In 2005, only four people participated. Last year over 400 people participated and we collected over 350 bags of trash. We are hoping to increase those numbers again this year. Free food is provided for participants and some camaraderie among team-mates, and a little friendly competition for awards, makes the work day fun.
The nice weather is already calling people outside. And the changing landscape, the greener grass and flowers popping up everywhere, makes the need to pick up trash more apparent. The Chamber of Commerce has already been getting calls about the Annual Trash-Off, and the Beautification Committee is excited about the community’s interest.
This year’s event is April 21st. Check-in will begin at 9:00am in the parking lot in front of Strike-A-Lot Lanes. Donuts and juice will be available at check-in. The Community State Bank will be grilling and serving hot-dogs for lunch, beginning about 11:30am. Each participant will receive a ticket for a free hot-dog, chips, and a drink. Awards will be given after the teams have returned and bags have been tallied.
There are several ways you can help. Organize a team from your business, club, sports team, church, family, or friends. Or just participate as an individual. If you can’t get out-doors to help, pray for good weather and safety for all the participants. While the need to pick up trash is the most pressing, helping with check-in, serving lunch, tallying bags, and providing financial support is needed, too.
Each year, in conjunction with the City Wide Trash Off, the 4th grade students from Poteau School participates in a Poster Contest as part of a litter awareness campaign. This year, the top 10 posters will be placed on facebook and we are asking the public to help choose our winners. Posters will be picked up and uploaded to Facebook by April 7th. Please go to our page at www.facebook.com/poteautrashoff and help choose your favorite poster. 4 posters are chosen as 1st, 2nd and 3rd place and “Best of Show”. The winners receive gift cards from Wal-Mart. The Poster Recognition takes place at City Hall on April 19, 2012 at 6:00pm. Vote for your favorite and then come to city hall and support our future!
To register or volunteer to help, call the Chamber of Commerce office (918-647-9178). Volunteers can request to pick up designated areas, but please check with chamber office to make sure those areas are not already assigned or requested.
