The Oklahoma City Philharmonic and Oklahoma City Orchestra League Present The 2012 Side By Side Concert
Oklahoma City - On Wednesday, April 11, 2012, at 7:30pm, at the Civic Center Music Hall, the Oklahoma City Philharmonic, the Oklahoma Youth Orchestra, and the Oklahoma City Orchestra League present the 2012 Side-By-Side Concert.
This concert brings together members of the Oklahoma City Philharmonic with some of Oklahoma's brightest young musicians. This year, under the direction of Maestro Joel Levine, this combined Orchestras will be performing three spectacular pieces including Mercadante's "Concerto in E minor," featuring soloist Bret Patterson on flute, Lalo's "Concerto in D minor," featuring soloist Cody Byrum on cello, and Borodin's "Symphony No. 2."
Both soloists are winners of the Orchestra League's annual Music Olympics Competition and were selected to make their orchestral debuts by Maestro Levine. These statewide competitions consist of six categories for young musicians and take place each February. The winners of the competitions performed in recital on 19 February 2012 at Petree Recital Hall in the Bass School of Music, on the Oklahoma City University campus.

Currently a junior at Stillwater High School, Bret Patterson has been studying flute for six years. In 2008 Bret became a member of the NCDA District Honor Band, an organization he would continue to be a member of over the next four years, most recently as the principal flautist in 2012. In 2010 Bret began studying privately with Mary Fukushima after previously studying flute with Eileen Ellison for two years. During his High School music career Bret has won the 2012 Oklahoma Flute Society Outstanding High School Soloist award, the 2011 and 2012 Carver Competition Outstanding Woodwind Award as well as being named the 2012 Carver Competition Overall Winner. In addition, Bret has also been a member of the 2011 OMEA All-State Band and a member of the 2012 OMEA All-State Orchestra and has consistently received superior ratings on solos and ensembles at the annual OSSAA Solo and Ensemble Festival. Bret also plays an active role in his band program at Stillwater, currently serving as the principal flautist of both the Stillwater High School Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Orchestra as well as serving as Drum Major.
Last summer Bret attended the Wildacres Flute Retreat, where he studied with the renowned flautists Göran Marcusson and Bradley Garner, in addition to also attending the George Parks Drum Major Academy, and the Oklahoma Association of Student Councils BASIC Leadership Workshop. Outside of Bret’s musical endeavors, he enjoys being a part of a variety of clubs at the high school including Student Council, Youth in Government, and National Honor Society. When not in school Bret is an avid reader of philosophy and theology and on sunny days Bret relaxes by playing a round of golf.
Cody L. Byrum
Cody L. Byrum is from Oklahoma City and is a junior at Putnam City North High School. He has been playing the cello for 8 years and currently studies with Dr. Jonathan Ruck at the University of Oklahoma. In addition to the Buttram Competition, Cody has performed with the Quartz Mountain Arts Institute, Allstate Orchestras, Central Honors Orchestras, and North Central Honors Orchestras.
Other music teachers that have contributed to his musical success include Ms. Molly Baugh, Director of the Putnam City North Orchestra, Ms. Jessica Stephens of the CAPPS Middle School Orchestra, Ms. Debbie McDonald of the Hefner Middle School Orchestra, Mrs. Christy Kiespert of the Christy Kiespert Piano Studio, and Mrs. Barbara Henderson, Grandmother and Cellist. Cody’s interests include practicing the cello and piano, planning for college life, and having fun with his friends. Cody plans to study Cello Performance in college.
