The Pollard Theatre in Guthrie Debuts “The Nerd” on February 11
By Tourism Industry Partner
Guthrie, Okla. (Feb. 7, 2011) – The Pollard Theatre in historic downtown Guthrie, Okla. presents the hilarious comedy, “The Nerd,” running February 11 through March 5.
“The Nerd” is well known among critics and theatre goers as one of the most comical plays ever written. Its focus is on the young architect, Willum Cubbert, and a fellow ex-GI, Rick Steadman, who saved Willum’s life in Vietnam. Though Willum has never met Rick, he sends him a letter saying that as long as he is alive “you will have somebody on Earth who will do anything for you.” Willum is thrilled when Rick shows up unannounced at Willum’s door on the night of his thirty-fourth birthday party, but the elation quickly fades when Willum realizes that Rick’s lack of social skills and intelligence make him the “house guest from hell.”
“Regional theatre audiences across the country have raved about “The Nerd” for thirty years now,” said W. Jerome Stevenson, artistic director for The Pollard. “With such a successful track record, we feel it’s the perfect way to kick off the New Year and the second half of our twenty fourth season.”
Robert Matson, a long time performer on the Pollard stage stars in the title role of Rick Steadman, a role that many think he was born to play.
“Robert is a perfect fit for this role. With his unique brand of physical comedy and razor sharp timing, Robert was the first and last choice for this role, and Pollard audiences will be rolling in aisle from the results,” said Stevenson.
