Fall is a perfect time to experience the curvaceous Talimena National Scenic Byway in southeastern Oklahoma.  The byway meanders through the Ouachita National Forest across the tops of an ancient mountain range.
The rugged red buttes of the Gloss Mountains rise majestically from the plains as you drive along Highway 412 near Fairview.  Also known as the Glass Mountains, these mountains glisten in the sunlight due to a high concentration of selenite crystals.
The Gloss Mountains near Fairview are rugged red mesas covered with selenite crystals that cause them to sparkle in the sunlight.  The mountains can be viewed from the scenic section of Highway 412, or you can stop at the small state park area and hike.

The Mountain Gateway Scenic Byway in southeast Oklahoma follows Hwy 59/270 for 22 miles between Heavener and the Arkansas state line. The byway winds through the forested valleys of the Ouachita Mountains and the 26,445-acre Winding Stair Mountain National Recreation area.
