Hackberry Flat Wildlife Management Area | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
This wetland jewel in southwest Oklahoma plays host to over 200 species of birds, particularly waterfowl, shorebird and other wetland-dependent bird species. Owned and managed by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, the restored wetland basin at Hackberry Flat is 3,700 acres and is surrounded by over 3,000 acres of mixed-grass prairie and croplands. This patchwork of habitat provides food during fall and spring migration, as well as the winter season, for literally thousands of birds. Hackberry Flat is a multi-use area attracting hunters, bird watchers and photographers alike. The newly built Hackberry Flat Center offers public restrooms, interpretive information and a message board for visitors to report their sightings and experiences. Early morning and late evening are the best times to visit Hackberry Flat. The best way to view birds here is by driving the gravel roads that run along the dikes. Two observation towers provide great viewing on this flat terrain. With its close access to a large variety and number of species, this area has developed a reputation as a birders paradise!
