El Reno


For a taste of history visit Historic Fort Reno, an Indian Territory military fort built in 1875, where you'll breakfast with living history re-enactors. Stroll El Reno's quaint downtown district on a guided specialty tour with charming shops. Enjoy a portion of the world-famous 750-pound onion-fried burger cooked each May during the annual Fried Onion Burger Day Festival. We hope you'll visit one of our outstanding hotels, bed and breakfast inns, unique shops and restaurants, historic sites, recreational activities and special events that contribute to the overall experience that is El Reno!


Day 1
9:45 am
Arrival,welcome.

10:00 am
Guided tour of the Canadian County Historical Museum complex and grounds including a school, hotel, jail and General Sheridan's cabin. New to the museum is the Elk Horn Saloon, Featuring Ms. Lilly's Dress Shop. Choose authentic period clothing at the dress shop and have your picture taken in the Saloon. At the museum, Board the Heritage Express Trolley, the only rail-based trolley in Oklahoma! The trolley travels from the Canadian County Historical Museum through the historic downtown area where you can exit to enjoy a great meal at one of the unique restaurants or browse one of the many specialty shops.

11:40 am
Lunch at one of the unique eateries downtown.

1:00 pm
Guided tour of the Canadian County Historical Museum complex and grounds including a school, hotel, jail and General Sheridan's cabin constructed in 1876.

2:15 pm
Select-a-Tour of historic downtown El Reno to suit the taste of your group, or if your group is large enough, split up and offer two tours simultaneously. Be sure to leave time for shopping. Tour choices include: Heroes Plaza Scavenger Hunt, Historic Buildings and Renovation Projects, Chocolate Mystery Tour, or Artist's Mural Tour.

3:15 pm
Free time to enjoy specialty shopping and browse antique and collectible shops.

4:30 pm
Light refreshments/check into hotel.

5:15 pm
Evening entertainment may include a drive-by Historic Homes Tour, Stained Glass Tour, Theatre, Lucky Star Casino, El Reno Bowl, or Murder Mystery Theatre.

7:00 pm
Dinner at local restaurant and/or entertainment venue. May we suggest:

1. Bill & Clara's Home and Ranch is a 1950's brick home in the country. They offer a Chuck Wagon Dinner and Trail Walk, a Spring or Fall Hike, and Fishing at a large private lake.
2. Goff House Inn was built in 1900 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Enjoy fine dining by reservation and tour the fully restored home.
3. Historic Fort Reno offers a catered dinner at the beautiful Chapel or the newly restored Visitor's Center. Enjoy an evening ghost tour with guides that have seen it all!
4. Lucky Star Casino has over 650 gaming machines to play 24 hours a day; they also have blackjack and Texas hold'em tables. Lucky Star's newest feature is their restaurant and bar, The Rez, with a variety of food to choose from.

9:00 pm
Indulge the sweet tooth with specialty desserts and return to hotel.

Day 2
8:30 am
Guided tour of Fort Reno, including the Visitors Center/Fort Reno Museum, the historic properties restoration project, the Chapel built by German POWs, and the post cemtery filled with legends of the historic fort.

11:30 am
After touring Ft Reno, feel free to visit one of the following:

1. Historic Darlington is now home to Redlands Community College Applied Research Center, boasting a Grade A Goat Dairy with state of the art equipment. Tour the premises, complete with 60 milking goats, 70 meat goats, and a seasonal cheese-making demonstrations. Historic Darlington is perhaps the oldest link to El Reno's past still home to two original 1800's Masonic Buildings and a natural spring.
2. North of Darlington on the Chisholm Trail (HWY 81) is the largest Tribal Buffalo Herd in Oklahoma. Watch 260 head of Buffalo graze native grasses on tribal lands adjacent to Lucky Star Casino.
3. Crimson Creek Golf Course offers one of the most challenging courses in Oklahoma. Nestled in a beautiful setting at Lake El Reno, Crimson Creek is sure to make your visit a memorable one.
4. Lake El Reno has 333 acres of open land and 300 acres of flat water you can use for water skiing, swimming, boating and fishing.
5. Redlands Community College Art Gallery is one of two Smithsonian Certified Galleries in the State.

But whatever you do, don't leave town without stopping for a famous Fried Onion Burger. El Reno celebrates this local delicacy with the annual Fried Onion Burger Day Festival, featuring cooking of the world's largest onion-fried hamburger!

Historic Fact
Calling all train enthusiasts! El Reno was once one of the greatest railroad hubs in the nation. Much of that history is still alive throughout the community. The fully-restored Rock Island Depot houses the Canadian County Historical Museum where you can relive the railroad days of the past. El Reno is also home to the only rail based trolley in Oklahoma.
