Kiowa County, named after the Kiowa tribe, is located in southwestern Oklahoma. In 1858, Camp Radziminski was established by the U.S. military, but was abandoned the next year. The Western Trail, a route for cattle movers between Texas and Kansas, ran through Kiowa County. At the turn of the century, railroad construction began in Kiowa County and the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway, the Blackwell, Enid and Southwestern Railroad and the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railway were built. The Kiowa County Historical Museum in Hobart is housed in the 1909 Rock Island Train Depot. The museum features historical items from the area. Great Plains State Park near Hobart offers visitors rock climbing and hiking, while water sports and fishing can be enjoyed on Tom Steed Lake.
