Carter County, located in south-central Oklahoma, was created in 1907 and named after a prominent Chickasaw and Cherokee Congressman, Charles David Carter. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, railroads were introduced in Carter County, and they expanded as oil exploration grew. The oil and gas industry has continued to be important to the growth of Carter County throughout the years. Lake Murray State Park, Oklahoma’s oldest and largest state park, is located near Ardmore, the county seat of Carter County.
