Murray County, located in south-central Oklahoma, was named for William H. “Alfalfa Bill” Murray, president of the 1906 Oklahoma Constitutional Convention and later governor of Oklahoma. In 1886, the first railroad was built in the county. In 1904, Platt National Park was established near Sulphur and featured natural springs with bathhouses and spas.
Along with nearby Turner Falls, the area became a tourist destination. Platt National Park is now known as the Chickasaw National Recreation Area, which borders the Lake of the Arbuckles. The Arbuckle Historical Society Museum of Murray County in Sulphur includes memorabilia and artifacts, as well as genealogical records. Also in Sulphur, the Chickasaw Cultural Center explores the history and culture of the Chickasaw Nation.
