Woodward County, located in northwestern Oklahoma, was named for the town of Woodward and was created in 1907 at statehood. Military presence in Woodward County began early on, with expeditions in 1857 and 1860, and the establishment of Camp Supply (later Fort Supply) in 1868. In the late 1800s, cattle were herded through the county on the Great Western Trail. The Southern Kansas Railway was built in 1887, and the town of Woodward was formed along its route. In Woodward, the Plains Indians & Pioneers Museum showcases the history of Woodward County and its people. Fort Supply features living history events and programs detailing life at the fort, which was closed in 1894. Fort Supply Lake offers campsites, fishing and boating.
