Texas County, located in the Oklahoma panhandle, was created at statehood in 1907 and named for the state of Texas. In the 1880s, two cattle trails went through Texas County, and raising cattle became a large industry in the area at that time. The railroad was built in 1901 and with it came settlers. Oil and gas exploration began in Texas County in the 1920s and has since been an important economic feature.
