The Newcastle Bridge, also known as the old U.S. 62 bridge, was the first federal highway project constructed in Oklahoma. Built in 1923, this trestle bridge contained a whopping ten spans that stretched over the South Canadian River. The bridge operated for 40 years before it was closed to traffic in 1963. Another 50 years passed before two of the bridge's spans were damaged in a storm in 2013. Later, seven additional spans were demolished, leaving just one span behind as a tribute. The bridge span can be seen on the west side of I-44 over the river.
