Embrace the fall season at Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center's Autumnal Equinox Walks. These special guided tours are offered at Oklahoma's only prehistoric Native American archaeological site open to the public.

As the end of summer nears and crops are ready for harvest, the time of the year arrives for the most important of ceremonies for the eastern American Indians, the Busk or Green Corn Ceremony. The Green Corn Ceremony was a harvest and renewal ceremony that took place around the autumnal equinox in the Spiro area.

Hear archaeologist Dennis Peterson discuss the powerful Caddoans who created the mounds between 900 and 1450 AD during this two-hour tour. From the history of the excavations and details about American Indian ceremonies to stories of the unusual happenings associated with the mounds Peterson will also answer questions along the easy one-mile walk. Discover how the Caddoans became a very important leadership group and why some of the twelve mounds line up for the solstice and equinox sunsets during the Autumnal Equinox Walk at the Spiro Mounds.
