The Mother Road: Hawgs & Rods on Route 66 Festival
Come to historic downtown Sayre located on Route 66 in western Oklahoma for the Mother Road: Hawgs & Rods on Route 66 Festival. Car and motorcycles lovers will enjoy the hot rods and other automobiles lined up on the town's famous Main Street, which was featured in the Grapes of Wrath. The car show includes dash plaques, cash prizes and trophies for the cars named the best of the best. Enter your project car to compete or come enjoy the other one-of-a-kind creations. There is something for all ages at this family friendly event, and kids will enjoy the giant inflatables.
If you are feeling athletic, kick the day off bright and early at the 5K Zombie Run. Zombies will chase you through the 5K certified course that starts at 4th St and Main St.
The Downed Bikers and the Red Knights Fun Motorcycle Run will start and end at The Rail. Fun Run participants will get a special wristband for free entry into the motorcycle show and enjoy exclusive food and drink specials at The Rail.
Take part in the Chili Cook-Off and make your best chili, green chile, and salsa. Cash and trophies will be awarded for the tastiest recipes. Chili booths will be lined up down 5th Street and awards will also be given for the best booth decorations. Pre-registration for participation is required. If you don't feel like cooking, be sure to get your fill of the delicious chilis waiting to be sampled.
Get your dog involved in the festival fun and dress them up for the canine competition. They could win in several categories including Most Likely to End up in the Pound, Dog Gone Pretty, Dog's Got Talent and Best Dressed.
The Route 66 Vintage & Craft Market will pack the Activity Barn behind the Sayre Courthouse. Browse through the vendors with gorgeous handmade and antique items. It's a great place to start your Christmas shopping early.
Stop in the Gallery@112 and paint a pumpkin. 60 free pumpkins are up for grabs and any pumpkin painted before noon is eligible for the pumpkin decorating competition open to all ages. Pumpkins will be judged on theme, creativity and application. After the judging you get to take your pumpkin home.
Prove your car is the coolest and can really hit the pavement at the burn-out contest. It will take place on Broadway between Main and Maple, and bleachers will be set up for spectators to determine the winner by audience applause. You could even win cash and a trophy for being voted Top Smoke.
Once all the awards have been handed out and the sun lowers in the sky, everyone will join together at 4th Street and Main to watch the beautiful cars and bikes cruise Route 66 and Main Street. The cruise path will be from the courthouse to the new Sonic Drive-In. Gift certificates, freebies and prizes will be handed out to participants. The evening ends with music and fun at The Rail and the Courtyard Event Center once the sun has set.
From Amarillo, drive east on I-40. Take Exit 20 and drive north on Hwy 283 into downtown Sayre.
