Step back in time at the Washita Battlefield National Historic Site during Owa Chita Sundays. This interactive history program will help visitors understand the events of November 27, 1868—known as the Battle of Washita River or the Washita Massacre—when Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer led the 7th U.S. Cavalry in a surprise dawn attack on a Cheyenne village led by Peace Chief Black Kettle. Owa Chita Sundays take place on the last Sunday of each month through November, offering free activities and crafts to engage all ages in the history and cultures that enrich this historic site located within the Black Kettle National Grassland in western Oklahoma.
