Head to the Oklahoma History Center for a discussion of the book "The Shoemaker" with author and Oklahoma Military Hall of Fame member, retired Major Joe Lee Todd. The book focuses on the life of Louis Kerbel, a Russian Jewish man who was born in Ukraine in 1888. Kerbel worked as a shoemaker in Russia before moving the to the United States in 1911. In 1914, Kerbel moved to Oklahoma where he opened a shoe shop in downtown Tulsa. Kerbel helped several Black Oklahomans during the Tulsa Race Massacre in 1921 by concealing them in his shoe shop. Learn more about this incredible man at this program held in Oklahoma City this November. The program is free, however seating is limited. Attendees are asked to register in advance by calling or emailing the Oklahoma History Center.
