Herb growers, gardeners, and folks who just want to have the “thyme” of their lives will want to mark their calendars and plan to attend the 18th Annual Ponca City Herb Festival on Saturday, June 4th, 8 am – 4 pm at the L.A. Cann Memorial Botanical Gardens, located on 14th and Grand Avenue in Ponca City. This twice Redbud award-winning festival is hosted each year by the Sage, Rosemary and Thyme Garden Club.

Other festival activities for this free event will include live entertainment by Wisconsin’s renowned pan flute bank, Inkapirka, who will be playing once again in the gazebo. Sweet Harmony, a local favorite new to the festival this year, will entertain the Cann Home patio crowd in the morning.  Several free seminars will again be presented throughout the day on the patio. Last year’s very popular old-fashioned pie baking contest is returning once again to this year’s festival. After judging, festival attendees will be able to enjoy a free slice of pie.

The Children’s Activities Area, another popular attraction, will return, with several hands-on activities scheduled, including creating garden hats, as well as planting flowers in recycled children’s shoes and recycled paper garden pots.

From 12 noon to 1 pm, the students of Miss Suzi Singing School will once again delight festival attendees by performing on Cann House patio. Miss Suzi’s Singing School has been providing entertainment at the Herb Festival since it first came to the L.A. Cann Memorial Gardens. Ever-popular speaker at the Herb Festival, Susan Henning, District Manager for the Kay County Conservation Board, will again present one of her popular children’s puppet shows near the Children’s Activity Area beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Parking will be available across the street from the Cann Gardens at First Presbyterian Church and at Grace Episcopal Church on the northwest corner of 14th and Grand Avenue with a small donation to the church’s youth groups for their summer mission trips.

According to Mary Anne Potter, founder of the Ponca City Herb Festival, all monies raised by the Ponca City Herb Festival, Inc. will be used to enhance the public gardens of Ponca City. By staging this well-attended and well-organized festival at the L.A. Cann Memorial Botanical Gardens, it is hoped to heighten public awareness of all Ponca City public gardens and to raise funds for their continuation and development.

Situated along the various gardens paths located in the Cann Gardens – a 10-acre showcase of color, texture, fragrance and landscape architectural beauty- will be 100+ vendors with items such as hard-to-find plants, herbs, flowers, herbal crafts, outdoor garden furniture, antique and collectible garden wares, handmade herbal soaps and bath products, stoneware, metal ware, cooking supplies, festival lunches, and more, much more.

The Cann Gardens represent one of Ponca City’s finest public venues with quiet walkways, water features, and formal plantings intertwined among a variety of ornamental plants, shrubs and trees. A gift from Elsie Cann Brown, daughter of L.A. and Mary Cann in 1975, the gardens were renovated in 1977 and have become a focal point of horticultural beauty ever since.

A variety of plant life surrounds the historic 1908 Cann home. A gazebo donated by Ponca City’s Muchmore family is established in the perfect place for viewing these historical Oklahoma gardens. The wide pathways complement the beds, which are planted with daylilies, hostas, tropical plants, old-fashioned hollyhocks, and many more types of flowers and plants situated beneath the shelter of an assortment of flourishing trees.

So, mark your calendars for Saturday, June 4th from 8 am – 4 pm and plan to have the “thyme” of your life at Ponca City’s popular twice RedBud award-winning Herb Festival. For more information contact Ponca City Tourism at (580)765-4400 or www.poncacityherbfestival.net .
