Blanchard Schedules Veterans' Day Parade and Chili Cook-Off
By Tourism Industry Partner
On Saturday November 12, 2011 the citizens of Blanchard will have the opportunity to say thank you to all of the area veterans that have served and those that are currently serving in the Armed Forces to help keep us safe and protect the rights that we all enjoy today. A parade and chili cook off will be the order of the day. A parade down Main St. will step off at 10:30am. A “Mayors Choice” trophy will be awarded to the parade entrant judged to have the best Veterans Day Theme. Those 12 years old and under will compete for the best decorated Bicycle in the parade and a chance to win a brand new bicycle. Some early parade entries are the Governors Honor Guard, the 77th Army Band from Ft. Sill, the Oklahoma Shrine Pipe and Drum Corp along with High School Bands from Blanchard, Dibble and Bridge Creek.
A Chili Cook Off will be held at Lions Park after the parade. Live entertainment featuring Nathan Burris (A cousin of Tony K. Burris) will kick off at high noon. A chili Cook Off featuring area business, civic, religious organizations and citizens alike will show off their favorite chili receipts while striving for bragging rights and Blanchard’s Best Chili trophy. Donations of new unwrapped toys or $5 cash will be accepted for tasting and judging of the chili. All proceeds will benefit the Blanchard Area Toy Drive sponsored by the Blanchard 1st United Methodist Church.
Ok, the gauntlet has been thrown down. The challenge is simple and issued to all civic, religious, social organizations and citizenry alike, “sign up to cook chili at Lions Park”. I’ve heard stories of secrete receipts hidden within the ranks of the Blanchard Fire and Police Departments, the Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club and area restaurants and numerous accounts of others. Are these stories real or just a myth that will be busted? I guess we’ll see come November 12th. Get your Registration filled out and submitted by October 10th to secure a space, Registration forms may be picked up at area businesses or on line at www.cityofblanchard.us or calling 431-0670.
The Blanchard Veterans Day Celebration Committee is taking nominations for candidates for the parade Grand Marshall. If you know a veteran or active duty personnel that you would like to nominate submit the persons name and a brief bio. Telling us why they should be honored to the Veterans Day Celebration Committee at P.O. Box 299 Blanchard, Ok. 73010.
The next meeting of the Blanchard Veterans Day Celebration will be held on Monday September 26th at 6pm at the American Legion Hall. The public is invited to attend. We have all been touched in some manner by an active duty member or a veteran of our military. Let’s come together and say Thank You.
