Former Oklahoma State Senator Brooks Douglass will be featured in a special two-hour NBC Datelineepisode on Friday, January 7, at 8 p.m. Central Time. On Friday morning, Brooks will promote the Dateline episode with an appearance on the TODAY show.

The Dateline episode will focus on the brutal 1979 attack on the Douglass family in their rural Oklahoma home, in which two criminals claimed the lives of Brooks’ father and mother, and left him and his sister for dead. Douglass went on to become the youngest state senator in Oklahoma history when he took action against the injustices many victims of crime face, authoring more than 20 pieces of victims’ rights legislation.

After retiring from politics in 2002, Brooks produced, co-wrote, and starred in Heaven’s Rain, an inspiring motion picture based on the true events of his family. The project was filmed in Oklahoma in early 2010, and features well-known Oklahoma locations including the Oklahoma State Capitol and the Governor’s Mansion.

Directed and co-written by Hollywood veteran Paul Brown, the film stars Mike Vogel (Cloverfield, Miami Medical) and Taryn Manning (Hustle & Flow, Hawaii Five-0) as Brooks and Leslie Douglass. Brooks portrays his father, Richard Douglass, a prominent Oklahoma pastor. Heaven’s Rain screenings are being slated nationwide.
