Coming to Claremore, Oklahoma, on May 3 is the legendary Shirley Jones. A fun-filled week of events has people near and far excited for her arrival. Destination Claremore will be happening from April 29 through May 7 throughout Claremore and the surrounding area.

“After recently moving to Claremore I’m very anxious to experience another piece of the community’s history. Oklahoma! Originated here and to see Shirley Jones coming back for the first time since filming the movie is spectacular. It’s a show you won’t want to miss!” says Lisa Dennis, Claremore Convention and Visitors Bureau intern.

The highlight of Ms. Jones visit to Claremore is her performance at the Robson Performing Arts Center on Tuesday, May 3 at 6:30 pm. Back by popular demand, the Sounds of Music Orchestra will open for Ms. Jones. They performed for Patti Page last year and we are looking forward to their return to Claremore.  Towards the end of her performance, Miss Jones will be presented a proclamation signed by Governor Fallin that proclaims May 3 is Shirley Jones Day in Oklahoma.

“When I was growing up, just like all the kids my age, watching The Partridge Family was the highlight of the week,” said Tanya Andrews, Claremore Convention and Visitors Bureau executive director. “Now, knowing a little more about Claremore’s history and the significance of ‘Oklahoma’s Cast of Legends,’ having Shirley Jones in Claremore takes on an entirely new meaning.”

Claremore is Oklahoma’s Cast of Legends is Lynn Riggs, a play write and Claremore native. Riggs wrote “Green Grow the Lilacs” which became the basis for Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! At the age of 19, Shirley Jones played a very intricate part in the movie as the original Laurey. Within the collection at the Lynn Riggs Memorial is the original “surrey with the fringe on top” and Miss Jones’ dresses from the movie.  The Surrey is being moved to the JM Davis Arms & Historical Museum and will be on special exhibit for the arrival of Miss Jones. She will appear at the museum for the induction of her character Laurey, to the Claremore Wall of Fame on Monday, May 2 at 7pm.

The once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet Shirley Jones one on one will be Wednesday, May 4 from 7 to 9 pm at Cherokee Casino Will Rogers Downs. At this event you will be able to talk with Shirley, get autographs, and take photos with her. A special presentation by Claremore’s Mayor will take place during the Meet and Greet. The Mayor will present Miss Jones with a “key to the city” in honor of her role in Oklahoma! and in memory of Lynn Riggs.
