Custer County, created prior to statehood in 1896 and located in west-central Oklahoma, was named after Lt. Col. George A. Custer. In the early 1900s, the Choctaw, Oklahoma and Gulf Railroad, the Blackwell, Enid and Southwestern Railroad and the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railway were built in the area and contributed to the growth of cities and towns along their routes. The Heartland of America Museum in Weatherford features exhibits and artifacts that highlight life in western Oklahoma during the 20th century. The Western Oklahoma Historical Center, also in Weatherford, is home to the Western Plains Genealogical Society and gives a glimpse into pioneer life at the beginning of the 20th century. Clinton offers the Oklahoma Route 66 Museum, full of artifacts and mementos from the Mother Road’s prime.

In 2000, census records showed 26,142 people living in Custer County.
